So, Tink has gotten out from under the man... sort of, and started to work of herself. Of course that means that she has less time for Astoria. She's asked me to keep an eye on things and I agreed. What I really need from you folks is to find out who is still or wants to still be, around. I want to get things going again. If you could just leave a comment and let me know I'd like that very much. For those of you that might be interested in building or coding, leave a comment too or email me at secretagentcook@gmail.com That's it from me for now. I'll keep you all updated as things move along.

We invite players to join us back on port 1234, which is the Rasputin port. We have been in the process of moving for quite some time to TBA, but Jamdog is facing some hard health issues now and needs to take an indefinite break, so the move to TBA will have to be put on hold for now.
We will of course continue progress on the game like we always do, and look forward to development.
Hope to see you all very soon!
Alright, this is the official notice that email accounts are now available! Come one, come all, get your Astoriamud.com email address right here!
If you want one, contact either Tink or I.
Once you have one, you have two options on setting it up. First way is to set it up in an email client. Such as: Outlook, Outlook Express, Thunderbird, Windows Mail, Mail (Mac)... etc.
All you need to know to set one up is that we use an IMAP type of email. Both the IMAP and SMTP servers should be set to astoriamud.com. The only exception to the Astoriamud.com for the outgoing is if you have an ISP that requires you to use thier SMTP server. Once you have the servers in place, you need to make sure that your client knows to log into the outgoing server using your username and password. Methods to do that vary from client to client. If you have any problems, contact me.
Second option is to go to astoriamud.com/lichen and log in there. This might be only temporary depending on what else I find and if we decide to make it pretty. Good thing about this option is that its easy. Type in username, type in password. Boom, your in.
Again, any questions on this should go to me. You can email me at: puck [at] astoriamud [dot] com.
As Frenze reminded me today, I had offered awhile back to set up email accounts for those who wished to have one. They would be registered as <yourname>@astoriamud.com. I have unlimited email accounts available and setting them up is easy. If this is something that would interest you, please respond to this blog entry or contact me in game. I would prefer to use your player name the same as your email, but it is not required.
The best way to log on to your email account with us is through an email client. Such as Outlook, Outlook Express, Windows Mail, Mac Mail, Thunderbird, etc. We run an IMAP Server and the incoming server and outgoing server are both astoriamud.com.
Reminder: Your password should never be shared with anyone else, and if lost can only be recovered by either Puck or myself.

For the past several months, AstoriaMUD has been undergoing an overhaul to tbaMUD. While we enjoyed the flavor of Rasputin for a very long time, it is too hard to maintain and we have found through trail and error that the D20 system is not for us. With the move we will take the pleasure in keeping all of our zones, modifications, scripts and features, mixed with several new and inventive things that Jamdog has been hard at work completing for us, and a few that I have been too. We expect that we will soon be porting players to this new port, so check back for more updates on the changes undergoing there!
After a few prototypes, I'm officially releasing this banner. If anyone wishes to use it, feel free to do so. The image is found under http://astoriamud.com/images/banner.png. It is fairly large, so if you want a smaller version just put in the width and height tags to shrink it.

Code for just the banner and link to the website:

<a href="http://astoriamud.com"><img src="http://astoriamud.com/images/banner.png"></a>

Code for the banner to link to telnet:

Much thanks and adoration is due to Gabe for finally tracking down Astoria's infamous regular crash-bug.
Gabe suggested it was in the whois command, and when I looked at the code closely for that command, I discovered that memory allocation was being done incorrectly, such that allocated memory was not free'd up when whois had finished with it. This affected only offline players, but the memory corruption made the MUD unstable, so a crash could happen at any time (when the MUD tried to re-allocate the memory). Repeatedly using the whois command just meant that the crash would happen sooner, although it would rarely crash while in the whois code, making it very difficult to track down. This may also have been the cause of crashes during pfile saves, so I'm hoping this will also be fixed now. Thanks again to Gabe for figuring this out - it's been bugging me for weeks, if not months, and it's a huge releif to know that Astoria's old port is relatively stable again. |
Long, long ago (in May 2004), I was still taking my first tentative steps into the world of MUD coding, and one of AderonMUD's most regular players, called Almila, suggested to me that I allow players some way to see which zone or area they were currently in, as there was no actual way of finding this out.
Their suggested solution was to show the zone name at the top of the where command, instead of just showing the line 'Players in your zone'.
I did exactly as Almila asked.
Fast-forward to the present, and today, Gabe asked me to tell him where he was. This stirred ancient memories of the change I made to the where command in AderonMUD, and so I implemented it in Astoria too.
If you are ever lost in Astoria, typing where will now tell you which area you are in.
